When store owner Lucy Callahan opened Peachtree Place on April 15, 1985, the shop’s two rooms took up 1,100 square feet and featured a variety of brands like Irene Hirose, Gladys Boalt, Thymes and Cherchi’s Champagne Mustard. “From the very beginning we had a positive reaction to our unique mix of products and beautiful gift wrap” says Callahan. “I really wanted to bring a little bit of the South to the North Shore.”
The South Carolina native was encouraged to open the store by her husband, Jack. “He said ‘Do whatever you need to – don’t worry about rushing home to fix dinner, just focus on creating the best business you can’ and the poor man hasn’t had a home cooked meal since!” Callahan jokes. That dedication has led to the store’s growth every five years, turning it into the 7,000 square foot destination it is today. Peachtree Place now features an extensive collection of table top, home décor items, a carefully cultivated selection of gifts and a stand-alone store dedicated to children’s toys and clothing – Little Peach.
“If you had asked me when we first opened if we would still be here 30 years later, I would have said ‘you’re crazy'” says Callahan. She attributes her success largely to the community of customers that return to the store time and again. “We really have the best customers. They have let us become a part of their lives – we watch original customer’s children come in with kids of their own. After 30 years, you start to feel a real sense of place.”
