I wanted to share our experience at Sawbridge with changing out all of our Halogen track bulbs for LEDs…in the six months since we began the change, our electric bill has gone down 25%!

We were finding that the Halogen bulbs were just not lasting as long as they used to.  I started to mark the dates on the bulbs when I put them up and was finding many were lasting barely two months.  At $5 a bulb, that was getting expensive.  We had done a big change over to LEDs (48 bulbs) in our Simon Pearce room about two years ago and had not replaced one in that time.

LEDs had a reputation of being quite expensive, but I found them at Costco for about $9.  Since i was replacing the halogens 2 to 3 times a year, $9 started to sound better and better.  I began in June and we are now about 95% converted.  They claim to last 22 years and use 13 Watts of power versus 75 Watts or 90 Watts for the Halogens.  Light quality is excellent.  While we used to use a combination of spots and floods, I find the spots work better for us, since our tracks are so high.

Recently, I started to compare our electric bills and WHOA!!! way down…25% down; enough to offset the cost of the bulbs.

Some villages/town do rebates to encourage change over, however, Winnetka does not, but Costco in Glenview does.
